Drifting legally in Australia means getting on a track, and there are more drift days than ever. Every mainland state has at least one venue with regular drift nights, practice days or a club championship. Pick your state for the venues, who runs them and how to get started.

Getting on track
Depending on the event: a Motorsport Australia licence, an AASA licence or the club's own, and some also need club membership.
An approved helmet (AS1698 or better), long sleeves, long pants and closed shoes.
No leaks or loose items, a secured battery, and usually a fire extinguisher and marked tow points.
New to drifting? Start with a drift school, a skid pan session or a learn-to-drift day before an open practice day. Entry rules change, so always check the event page before you book.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I drift legally in Australia?
Only at organised events on a track or skid pan. Every mainland state has regular drift days. The main venues are Sydney Motorsport Park and Sydney Dragway (NSW), Calder Park (VIC), Queensland Raceway (QLD), Mallala and The Bend (SA), Wanneroo and Collie (WA), and Hidden Valley (NT).
Do I need a licence to drift?
Yes, for almost every drift day. Depending on the organiser, that's a Motorsport Australia licence, an AASA licence or the club's own licence, and many events also need club membership. Drift schools and come-and-try days are the easiest way in.
What wheels do drifters run?
On S-chassis Nissans, Chasers, Skylines and 350Zs, 18x9.5 +22 in 5x114.3 is the size we see most. Plenty of drifters also keep a cheaper set of 18x8.5s as spares.
Do SpeedWorks give discounts to drifters?
Yes. Verified drifters get 18 inch wheels in 5x114.3 and 5x120 for $800 a set (under 9 inches wide) or $900 a set (18x9.5 and staggered). Apply for a drift account, or DM @speedworksau on Instagram.
Venues, organisers and entry rules change often. This guide was checked in October 2026, so always confirm details on the organiser's own website before you book. Know a drift day we've missed? Tell us.
